Schlumbergera has different types:

  • Schlumbergera Buckleyi. The height of the plant can reach 50 cm. Flat stems have a bright green color. Flowers (variety of colors) size is up to 8 cm with long petals with a pointed shape

  • Schlumbergera Truncata. The plant height is about 40 cm. The stems grow about 25-30 cm length, and their color is light green. Blossoms very abundantly — several flowers on one segment. The shades of colors are varied — from gently pink to lilac;

  • Schlumbergera Gaertneri. Leaflike segments reach 7 cm length. The flowers are bright, red or red-orange;

  • Schlumbergera Russelliana. The height of the plant is about 30 cm. The length of the branches can reach 1 meter. Fleshy stems with dark green segments have no thorns. Blooms in late spring — early summer.

Care of Schlumbergera can’t be called difficult, but there are some nuances.

  1. Lighting. The flower doesn’t like bright sunlight. In spring and summer, it prefers shadow and partial shade, and in the flowering period it needs to be placed on the southern window.

  2. Soil. Mix turf, sand and sour peat in a ratio of 1:1:1. Put a drainage at the bottom of the pot.

  3. Watering. During flowering the plant must be watered abundantly (the soil must be always moist). After this period the plant should be transplanted and mildly watered until April. Then, Until September you have to water the plant only when the soil dries. Next the plant needs to be kept in enough cool and dry conditions for a two months.

  4. Air temperature. The plant is modest in terms of temperature conditions. It will survive even at a temperature +2 °C (35.6 °F) and even at +37 °C (98.6 °F). But the best temperature for this plant is from +18 °C (64.4 °F) to +30 °C (86.0 °F).

  5. Fertilizing. Twice a month during flowering the plant needs mineral fertilizers. Take half of the dose specified on the packaging. The rest of the time there is no need to fertilize the flower.

Schlumbergera refers to a cactus family. It is also called Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, crab cactus and holiday cactus. It has a rather unpretentious appearance, but at the time of flowering is completely transformed.

Schlumbergera is a native plant of South America and Brazil, where the humid climate prevails. It blooms there during the southern summer. In our country this decorative plant doesn’t change its way of life and blooms in the cold autumn or in the midst of winter. Flowering often coincides with Christmas, and it created one of the names of plants. You will always find different types of Schlmbergera in our decorative plants nursery. We will explain you how to take care of the plant, so it will always feel fine and please you with abundant flowering.
